2009 IBR - MY CRASH
WARNING - there are some ugly pics of the dead dear at the end, after a blank page or so. Don't scroll all the way down if you don't want to see them.
Also see my Lost and Found where in 2013 I found the stuff I lost during this crash.
LOST and FOUND
The light skid mark that travels off to the left in the picture is my front wheel partially skidding, as the fender was jammed into it, preventing it from moving much at all. The dark black line appears to be the rear wheel locked up, but I don't think I tried to break with either brake. If that is true, then I may have either been thrown forward, pushing the bike accidentally or some parts of the front of the bike could have pressed against the brake pedal. Of course, I might have subconsciously applied the brake, and in all the noise and confusion over braked.
The truck is parked at the extension to the pavement that I think the bike hit just after it ran off the road. That ensured that the damage would be more severe, as if it wasn't enough hitting a deer and sliding on pavement.
If you click on the image and zoom in, you can see the reflector poles on each side of the road a little more than twice as far as the extension in the pavement. That is where the skidmarks end and the sliding begins. I took the photo from about where the bike was sitting.
The bike did most of it's sliding on the left side, then flipped over a bit before stopping, just to ensure that the damage was total.
The deer did an incredible job of destroying the fairing and the front fender, and everything else up there. The officer questioned whether I really hit a deer, since there was no fur on the bike. The dead deer kinda made him think I might have been telling the truth. The tour pak was ripped open. Both saddlebags were pretty badly damaged, but stayed on, all my electronics survived, except my radar detector which I never found.
Damaged Riding Suit
the damage was not too severe, considering the severity of the crash. This is an expensive suit, but it was worth it.
GPS Location etc
Editors Note: In 2010 I stopped by the site as I was heading through the area.
The exact spot was north of Cowdrey, CO, Just north of the Platte River at
GPS coords 40d 56.401m, 106d 20.679m - there was no sign of a crash. BUT..... this was the WRONG spot.
I had the pics of the crash on my computer, but there was no battery power
left, so I could not confirm I was in the correct place. The correct
location is on Rt 127 in Cowdrey, CO on the way to Laramie, WY. N40.916364 W106.274365 or N40' 54.98184 W106' 16.4619.
This was confirmed with Google Maps Street View.
Then in 2013 I visited the site. Some of my stuff was still there. Go here to read that story and see the pics:
