What a Difference a Wet Floor Makes

2018-09-17

I stayed in a summer lake resort area last night. But it was off season, so not a lot of guests, and nice and quiet.

I wandered towards Romania, on as many side roads as possible, a nice days ride.

Crossing into Romania was easy, now I am free. For at least 3 months. I can stay in Romania for 3 months out of the next 6. I don't plan to be here that long, but it is good to have time. I still have to extend my insurance, but that should not be an issue.

I was tired and planned to stop in Arad as there were lots of Air BnB and Booking.com options. Then I saw the city on the Horizon. I am done with cities for a while. I immediately took left, which pissed off Google Maps. Even Garmin agreed. Never a good sign. I got stuck in horrible traffic, as there was a miles long backup of trucks. OK, I did not actually get stuck in said traffic. The good thing about a motorcycle is that we are special. There were two lanes. One was stopped, the other was barely being used by on-coming taffic. 60 MPH into the jaws of death do I head. Well, the oncoming traffic was stuck, so I got almost to the end of the line of trucks before there were too many oncoming big vehicles to continue. I was only a few trucks from the front, and when the oncoming lane freed up again, I headed to the front. A short wait for construction guy to send us on and I was free. Really, as fast as I wanted as I was the only one using the lane. I was watching for bikes though.

The route I chose did not exactly head in the direction I wanted, but who cares. Time is not an issue. I decided to get a hotel at the next SMALL town that had a tolerable choice. I got to one that reminded me of traveling in small Mexican towns years ago. There was a sign for a hotel, and it was even on booking.com

The hotel was fine. The room was clean if a bit outdated. The restaurant looked nice, although I think I was the only guest. It was well away from anything but offered a clean bed and a shower and food. Fine with me. BUT, the woman had just washed the floor. She did not want me to slip so asked me to wait 5 minutes for it to dry. While waiting, I checked the interwebs and found a place that sounded a bit too good to be true. When the woman allowed me to see the room, I asked if breakfast was included. She said no. For $29 in Romania, breakfast should be included. It is hard to find a place open for breakfast in Europe, as going out for breakfast is not a thing here. Unless you want to go out after 10 AM.

So I booked the too good to be true place. It was $35 including breakfast. Holy crap what a difference.

Exposed wood beams, antique furniture AND antiques in an unlocked display case in the room. Comfortable, clean and quiet. And BLAZING fast Internet. Google said so, and it WAS quick.

Lots of room to eat outside and in. I think it is off season and expect this place is pretty busy during the tourist season.

Weeping willows, Roses, a river, lots of Grateful Dead songs came into my head and I expect to be listening to them for days.

Sort of a beach, lots of water. If I understood correctly there are 17 mills using this underground river. The name of the hotel comes, somehow, from the history here. There is a full length movie on their website from the 50's that has the same name. Probably some significance. I will let you know if I can get the movie translated.

A play ground for the kiddies.

A replica of the Sydney Opera House. Well, actually a banquet hall for weddings. This place seems very popular for that.

This was the rustic looking part of the restaurant. Inside and out it was high end. The food prices were high end too. For Romania. Meat Lolly Pops, I mean, Lamb Chops, were $19, but that includes tax and no tip, and the wine was cheap. And they were top quality, and plenty of them. I am a happy camper. I might just move here.

I asked for the WiFi Password. The waitress wrote it down. Can you tell what it says? It does not matter, no password required.

On their website:Yes, Work and good wine defeats me often. But I am pretty sure I would not kill anyone for Schnitzel, Wiener or otherwise.

Here, the fiddlers sing continuously, and when some gave up, defeated by all this work and good wine, others came from the corners of the Mill…

Now, this Mill has stopped grinding a long time ago, it is more a place for treats and feasts as they took place only during the time of Grof Vermesy. The head innkeeper wanted to keep all things of the past… and, consequently, if you come to us, you can eat until you are full and still want some more. Nowadays, you cannot have such a vegetables stock even at your mother's.

And if you have fancier tastes, here you can find a Wiener schnitzel so good you'd kill for it, and also here the trout jumps to the oven by itself just to please and surprise you…
