RANT
OK, I tried. I really tried. Blogs work pretty good, but if, like me, you want something basic that will be unchanged for many years, blogs suck.
Getting the pages to look like I want takes too much time. My static pages work great. My SmugMug page works pretty good, although not the best. If Google photos set up something that worked like smugmug with folders and sub-folders, maybe they would look good, but once they got everything working right, they would change everything.
Nope, I am staying with my own pages. I will put links here, maybe, but probably not.
EDIT: as usual, I am vacillating. I will not know what will actually work best until I actually get on the road, but I have been playing with some of the settings, and other things, and am finding that this may be a useful tool for easy of blogging. I will probably still use my regular old fashioned site because I like it, and I will probably continue to use SmugMug because it i reliably great, but a WordPress blog has it’s uses.
EDIT: The same day as the last edit. So, photo handling. If you are using the blog software to create today’s post with today’s photos, all is fine. But I was trying to create a post from last spring’s trip. If I create a post dated last spring and “Publish” it, which means people can see it, then unpublish it, if I want to, I can insert photos into the page, and they will be saved in a folder dated last spring. If I realize I meant to publish it for the previous fall, I can change that, but the photos will stay in a folder for the spring. If I add more photos, they will go into the fall folder. If I add photos to my site but not into the post I am editing, they will go into a folder with the month of today, even if I later add them to the post.
Now the weird part. If I decide to add this media to some other post, I have to look in today’s month on the drop down. It does not matter where they are stored, the dumbass program wants to tell me they are from today. I can store photos anywhere and link to them, but I lose all the advantage of WordPress, and I cannot create a slideshow.
I keep wanting to like WordPress, but it seems that it wants to make it as difficult as possible to do anything but a very basic blog, unless you really want to get into the guts of the code. Like the post started, this SUCKS.
Plus, you cannot see it if you are off line. MY web page can be saved anywhere, even on an SD Card on my phone, and seen anytime, anywhere.
